Description
20th century Rococco style gilded frame.

Construction
Timber back frame with decorative compo ornament to the front in the form of oak leaves and patera to the corners, s-scrolls, c-scrolls, acanthus leaves and garlands. A ribbon and stick detail can be seen at the sight edge.

Issues
Soiling to the surface; missing leaf tips to the top left and top right corners; vulnerable sections at the centre of both left and right side members that could lead to future breaks; loss of some areas of gilding; flaking and loss to painted areas of the rear of the frame.

Brief
Address any structural issues; surface clean; replace missing elements; re-gild and tone where required; tone in losses to areas of paint on the rear of the frame using conservation colours.

Treatment
Missing elements were re-cast using a two-part putty and gilded then toned to match extant surfaces. Gaps in the vulnerable side elements were filled and gilded. The gilded surface was cleaned. Losses to the gilded surface were replaced then toned and distressed. Areas of paint on the back of the frame that had detached were reinstated.
