Description
Two 17th century gilded Auricular frames had been cut down to fit a specific painting and the remaining sections were discovered in an attic, in need of conservation treatment.

Brief
The frames required extensive consolidation of the gilded surfaces to enable them to be handled and stored safely in the future. Some structural issues where the side and bottom members joined needed addressing.

Treatment
Any loose or tented gilding was consolidated using conservation materials to create a stable flat surface. The whole top frame was painstakingly cleaned to remove many years of soiling.
Sections that were not fitting flush were separated, cleared of debris and clamped back together once a strong adhesive had been applied.
